Fix

Why your Tinder photos look blurry

Almost always one of four causes, and three of them are fixable in under a minute.

Short answer

Tinder re-compresses every photo you upload. If your source file is already small, slightly soft, or gets cropped hard into the tall card, that compression turns a marginal image into an obviously blurry one. Fix it by uploading a sharp, vertical image at 1080px or more on the short edge, straight from the original file rather than a screenshot or a messaging app.

Cause 1: your source file is too small

The most common one. Photos saved from WhatsApp, Instagram or a screenshot have already been compressed once. Tinder compresses them again, and the second pass is what you see. Always upload from the original camera roll file.

Cause 2: the crop is doing the damage

A wide landscape photo gets centre-cropped into a tall card, which means Tinder throws away most of the width and enlarges what remains. You lose resolution exactly where it matters. Upload vertical images.

Cause 3: it was already soft

Slight motion blur or a missed focus is easy to miss on your own phone at small size, and impossible to miss after compression. This is measurable — the audit tool reports a sharpness index for any photo, on device.

Cause 4: connection and cache

Occasionally photos display blurry because the app is still loading the full-resolution version. If a photo looks bad only sometimes, that's this. Force close, reconnect on wifi, and reopen before you go re-shooting anything.

Common questions

Why do my Tinder photos look blurry after uploading?
Tinder re-compresses uploads. If your file was already compressed — saved from WhatsApp or Instagram, or a screenshot — you're stacking a second compression on a first, and that's what produces visible blur.
What resolution should Tinder photos be?
At least 1080px on the short edge, in a vertical aspect ratio. That gives the app enough data that its compression stays invisible.
Why are my Tinder photos zoomed in?
Tinder crops to a tall portrait card. A landscape or square photo gets centre-cropped to fit, which both zooms in and discards resolution. Crop your photo vertical before uploading.
Does deleting and re-uploading fix blurry photos?
Only if the original upload was interrupted or cached badly. If the source file is small or soft, re-uploading the same file changes nothing.
